I am looking for unique centerpiece ideas for my August 2009 wedding. We are having homemade pies on the center of each table (about 20) I want to get the pie up off the table and then surround the pie with candles. Here is what I was thinking. Clear glass dinner plates on top of clear glass vases (vases van be different sizes and shapes). We could fill the vases with whatever, marbles, sand, fabric, battery operated lights, etc. And then the pie would sit up on top of the plate. Do you think this would look alright? Can you glue 2 pieces of glass together like this? Thanks for your input!
I think you should stick to one filler for the vases. Otherwise, its definitely unique (pie?!?) and it will look fabulous. My friend recently got married and she had big wine shaped vases filled with Jello — that was only refrigerated for a couple of hours then stirred — that looked marbley and very pretty. they actually used water gelatin and food coloring since the wedding color were teal.
I always see the fancy pie dishes at secondhand stores, many of them have covers and have never been used. I wouldn’t doubt you could find 20 if you put the word out to friends and family
how about something like this without the lid?

and place the candles around them
My cousin had cakes on each table and she asked around the family and friends for anyone that had a cake stand/plate. She ended up getting enough to use and just decorated around the base of the stand. The cake ended up being the centerpiece and looked great without any extra stuff.
I have found a great guide book that is showing you ideas for your wedding centerpieces and that for every season, with pictures and how to do steps, really great, I have bought it and my bride was really happy when she was reading it
check in source I have also made a blog about it, really great guide!
Here is my blog about that to http://www.weddingreceptioncenterpieces.net/
I think that is a recipe for trouble. It may sit nicely with no movement, but if someone even bumps the table I would be worried about the plate slipping, even with glue, or the whole thing tipping from the height. Having candles around this makes it even riskier. I wouldn’t bother with candles at all, people will be reaching for the pie at some point and you don’t want anyone to get burnt. I know it isn’t as fancy, but just take a box and put a piece of cloth over it. Skip the candles unless you get flameless ones, get other decorations to put around it instead.
How about pie servers as favors, and surround them with those? Clean them and people could serve themselves with their favor.
Instead of the two glass pieces put together why not put them on a stand. Maybe you could use something like this:

Or maybe you could get some cake stands and create this type of effect:

Or you may want to think about using centerpiece risers. Those might hold the pies better:

I think that using glass isn’t the best idea. I would stick with plastic.
